CONVENT OF ESTAVROMENOS AT PESSADA

A Convent currently unstaffed. In 1618 it was rebuilt on the ruins of an older Convent by the brothers Paul Kolela and Aggelos Valsamakis, who dedicated their large estate to the Convent. It is located in the area of Pessada and is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The titular icon, a superb work of art, is displayed in the church of Evangelistria in Pessada.

The church of St. John Chrysostomos is located next to katholicon (main part of the church). The church's altar is octagonal in shape and sits over the grave of the priest Kyriakos Petaloudes (19th century). The iconostasis (templon), the side doors of the holy sanctuary and the portable icons are truly impressive.

Also kept in the Monastery is the miraculous icon of the Virgin Diotissa (of Vlacherna) the only reamining treasure of the church of the Holy Virgin on the small island of Dias.

Celebrations are held on: Third Sunday of Lent (Holy Cross Worship Day), September 14th (the Exaltation of the Holy Cross), November 13th , January 27th (the Dormition and Recovery of St. John Chrysostomos - there is a Holy relic) and July 2nd (feast day of Theotokos Diotissa).

The Monastery which is deserted the last twenty years, following the death of the late extremely aged Nuns, is suitable for devout worshipers that will begin a monastic life.
