CHURCH OF THEOTOKOS AT NTOMATA

The church has an invaluable guilded wood-carved iconostasis (templon). Its portable icons are works of Russian origin.

Kept in the Church is the casket of Holy Martyr and Ecumenical Patriarch Gregory V who was hanged by the Turks at the entrance of the Patriarchate, during Easter Sunday on April 10th 1821.

The holy corpse, found floating upon the waters of Bosporus, was collected by the Cephalonian Captain Nicholas Sklavos who carried it to Odissos for burial. The casket was given to him as a blessing and he in turn dedicated to the Church of the Holy Virgin.

The lattice-shaped women's observatory is situated in the back of the church.

The church celebrates on November 21st (Presentation of Theotokos) and April 10th (feast day of St Gregory V).
