THE MONASTERY OF THEOTOKOS OF ATROS - POROS

This is the oldest Monastery in Cephalonia. The somewhat inaccessible Monastery is located 760m above sea level on a steep uphill. The Middle Age Tower and the very old Archondariki are preserved. The Monastery was built in the Byzantine era around the 8th century. In its peak days it amassed large real estate holdings amounting to "8.000 vatoulia". This well-organized Monastery with its large brotherhood developed activities that cultivated the spiritually and culturally the district of Poros. The saintly monk Klimis, whose inclusion into the Sainthood of the Orthodox Church is expected to materialize in the next few years, chose this location to lead a monastic life. The charismatic monk became Abbot of the Monastery during the 19th century.

Unfortunately, the Monastery has suffered serious damage following the earthquake in 1953 and a subsequent fire in 1994.

It celebrates on September 8th , the feast day of the Holy Virgin's Birth.
